A Midsummer Night's Dream - Act 5 Journal Topics

A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Act 5 Journal Topics

Please pick one journal topic and answer that topic using complete sentences.  Use evidence from the play when appropriate.

  1. The “actors” in the play The Most Lamentable Comedy, and Most Cruel Death of Pyramus and Thisby are extremely nervous about performing for the duke and duchess.  Write about a time you had to perform or speak in front of an audience.  How did it feel to be in front of a crowd?  Is there a “secret” you can share that could help others cope with this situation?
  1. Of the three marriages that take place at the end of the play, which do you see as being the most stable? Why?  Considering the events and dialogue between these characters in the story, list the positive and negative qualities of all three future marriages.
  1. It is obvious throughout the play that Pyramus and Thisby will be a hilarious, amateurish production.  Write a review of the worst movie, TV show, or book you have seen or read.  Discuss the characters, situations, and settings, and how they contributed to making the story so disappointing.  When you are done, share your review with another person.  Does this person share your opinion?
  1. Write a dialogue on the cast of Pyramus and Thisby after they perform their play and are on their way home from the palace.  Will their interpretation of the play’s success be different from that of the duke and the duchess?  What will each character say about his or her individual performance?
  1. The wedding guests make fun of the play Pyramus and Thisby because it is melodramatic and ridiculous, yet the “lovers” in the play aren’t much more ridiculous than those in the audience.  Referring back to particular events in the story, discuss which lovers appear the funniest and why.  Why do you think love makes people do funny, outrageous things?

    Question 1
Last year I was very nervous to read my expository essay in front of the class because I thought my paper was really boring and I hate doing anything in front of the class. I got really nervous but I kept reading my paper carefully. My only piece of advice is look up frequently, maybe even at a friend and breathe! It's not a big deal if you mess up because no one will even remember the next day.

The most stable marriage would probably be Lysander and Helena. Why I think they would be the most stable is because they are not that crazy as the other marriages. Some of the positive qualities will be that they will live hofley happy ever after. And some of the negative qualities will be that they are the same character that they are and they will still be crazy.

One time I had to speak in front of an audience for a toast. I felt nervous and scared because I was afraid I would say the wrong thing. My secret is to you is if you're afraid to look them in the eye just look over them.

    Question 2:

I think that Lysander and Hermia’s marriage will be the most stable for many reasons. First of all, they both love each other and would do anything for each other. For example, in the beginning of the story, Hermia was willing to die than not be with Lysander. Also, they show a lot of affection towards each other. Furthermore, even though I think Lysander and Hermia have the most stable relationship, the other two couples aren’t far behind them. In my opinion, I think Theseus and Hippolyta have the next most stable relationship. Some positive points about their relationship is that they love each other, and that they appreciate each other. Even though they have many positive things about them, they do have some negative points. To begin with, they have dated Oberon and Titania. Next, is Helena and Demetrius. I think Helena and Demetrius relationship is a fake. I strongly think it’s a fake because they would never be together if it wasn’t for Oberon’s love pansy in the first place. Moreover, all of them love each other, and are happy together.

I was nervous for the chorus concert because I was afraid that I was going to mess up and I kept on thinking that I was going to mess up, but when we started it I found out that there was nothing to be nervous about.

Q1. One time that I was nervous in front of a crowd was when I did Cabaret Night a couple years ago. Before, I got on the stage I was scared and really nervous. All I could think about was “What if I start to get the hiccups? What if I sneeze? What I cough or choke? What if I forget the words?” But, I think if you just forget about all of that stuff, you’ll be fine. Don’t think too much. If you’re performing, then you probably already know it by heart. Do you have to think about the words when you’re singing along to one of you favorite songs? Usually not, so you’ll be just fine.

Q1- I had a solo in this past chorus concert. I was so scared I was going to mess up, freeze, or sing a horribly wrong note. Here’s my advice: If you’re performing, have fun with it! It’s much easier if you just have fun with it. Also, if you’re nervous about what people will think of you, it doesn’t matter what they think! Have fun with it!

  9. M204 Question 2

Out of the three couples, I think Theseus and Hippolyta will have the most stable relationship. There were no big arguments or problems between them in the play, unlike the other couples. The second most stable couple would be Hermia and Lysander. They were together for at least most of the play, until Puck made his mistake with the flower. Even though the problem was fixed, what if the effects wore off or took a turn, causing Lysander to hate Hermia again? The couple that is most likely to fall apart would be Helena and Demetrius, considering this idea of the flower’s effects wearing off. Demetrius also did not like Helena at the start of the play. Considering the possible outcomes of the flower, I think Theseus and Hippolyta will turn out the best.

I was very nervous when I had to perform my solo in our chorus concert because it was my first solo and I have never sang in front of an audience. My trick is to just think that it's ok if you mess up because no ones going to make fun of you. That is what I do when I have to perform in front of an audience.

  11. M08Q3:I must say the absolute worst movie that I have every seen would have to Snowmen. The characters had some really stereotypical and cheesy jokes, fighting to against the average, held back, stupid, bully. The plot was about this kid who had leukemia and tries to blackmail the school with it(He fails ultimately) along with this Jamaican kid who says ay man a lot. Oh yeah there's also this other weak kid but he's not important. While trying to get world record for snowmen built you got this love thing between the most popular girl and the "sick kid" (original). Then the writers try to fix the plot with plot twist ( 49% worked but not really, movie was still weak.) This really builds into the pile of $20 budget movies I think, and what made this movie really sad was someone I trusted showed me this. I shared my opinions with Cole Hamerla and he agrees totally. (Sorry for that paragraph, I saw an opportunity)

The onlu time I can think of where I had a hard time doing a speech was in 5th grade and I had to do a big presentation over a person of our choice. The best way I was able to push through was to just read and not stop and look up. The best advise I can give is do your best and be proud of whatever you do.

One time that I got scared was from performing at cabaret night at the high school in front of a big crowd. I was nervous and a little scared because I thought I was going to mess up. When I finished my act, everyone clapped and cheered for me and I felt better. That was one time that I felt scared.

    Question 1
I remember back in 3rd grade, I had to completely memorize a three paragraph essay on a character in history. Sure it was only three paragraphs, but still, I was in 3rd grade. While presenting, I kinda stuttered at times and almost forgot the words, but when that happened, I just improvised and kept going.
