Act 4 Journal Topics - A Midsummer Night's Dream

A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Act 4 Journal Topics

Please pick one journal topic and answer that topic using complete sentences.  Use evidence from the play when appropriate. Make sure to use your blog number when posting (M for Munsterman, LA class period, Chromebook number - Ex. M912).

  1. Oberon decides to repair the “mistakes” he and Puck made with the magic flower.  If you had a magic flower that could correct the problems of the world, what would you fix?  Discuss two or three changes you would make and how they would affect society.

  1. Lysander and Hermia disobey Athenian law by running away to get married.  Is it ever okay to break the law?  Is so, under what circumstances?  Were Lysander and Hermia justified in their actions?  If you were a judge, would you convict them?  Why or why not?

  1. Egeus is very angry with his daughter for disobeying him.  Think about and write down his reasons for being angry, and then discuss whether these reasons are justified.  How did the status of women during this period in Athens affect the course of women’s lives?  How might the father/daughter relationship be different today?

  1. When Titania refuses to give Oberon the Indian child, Oberon manipulates her in order to get his own way, and places her in an awkward, embarrassing situation.  List several compromises and/or solutions Titania and Oberon could develop to solve their dilemma.

  1. In all respects, Titania and Bottom are opposites.  Bottom is a common, uneducated Athens citizen, and Titania is a beautiful fairy queen, capable of supernatural powers.  Yet, because of the magic flower, Titania falls in love with Bottom.  Do you believe that opposites attract, or do you think people who fall in love are very similar?  Which type of relationship do you think is better?  More exciting?  Comfortable?  Which might last longer?

What I would use the flower to with a problem in the world is I would make the Korean War never happen. Maybe if It never happened we would be friends with them and there people would maybe be treated better.

  2. Blog Topic #5 - M216

I honestly don’t think it matters. The way I see it, if you are similar to someone a lot, you have more to talk about, as far as interests go. If you both like video games, baking, and going for runs, then you can talk about all of those things together. On the other hand, if you’re total opposites, you have a lot to learn about each other. You could even try to make your partner like some of the stuff that you do, so you can do it together. It all just depends on the two people, not really their interests.

I think it is ok to break the law at this point because Hermia’s father is being very rude to her by not wanting Hermia to marry and love Lysander. There is no circumstances for this. No they were not because they did the right thing. No because they needed freedom.

He thinks that whatever he says goes. That women are something you can boss around and manipulate. I think he just want what's best for his daughter, but his judgement is clouded. Today women have a lot more rights, and freedom than back in that time period. I think that if they existed today there relationship may be better, but there would still be some problems.

  5. M213 Q1

If I had the magic flower I would fix people's relationships to be back together again. I would also make sure everybody is nice to people and aren't getting bullied. Then I would fix every little mistake that everybody has done to make them feel better.

Q2. I don’t think it’s ever okay to break the law unless it’s self defense. I don’t really think Lysander and Hermia were really justified for their actions. If I were a judge, a judge in Athens, I would've punished them immediately if it was a really big deal.

    Question 4
They could have shared the child together.
Oberon could have let Titania keep the child.
Titania could have gave the child to him but keep a close eye on them.
They could have never took the child.
Titania could have kept the child a secret.
Oberon could have just stop and let her have it.

  8. M219 I think that opposites attract. I think that a relationship where the people are very different would be better because then you find new stuff about them that makes you like them more and the same around.

    2. Some problems in the word that I would fix are world hunger, children without homes, global warming, and help to save animals that are going extinct. I would change these things because it will help make the world a better place. These would affect society by helping people become more civilized, and by making people see that they should help in their community and appreciate what they have.

    Question 2:

I think that it is okay to break the law depending on the situation. If I was the judge of Athens, I wouldn’t convict Lysander and Hermia for running off because they should be allowed to date who they want to date. Though, they should get a little bit of a punishment for breaking the law, but they shouldn’t be executed for it. Furthermore, if I lived in Athens at this time, my response might be a little different because of the way of life back then.

    Question 2
Yes, it would sometimes be okay to break the law depending on circumstances. Like in the case of murder, self-defense would be the only way that it would be okay to break that law. To add on, I do believe that Hermia and Lysander were justified in their decision. They had to do what they did for love and for Hermia to escape death. If I were a judge I would have to convict them under Athenian law. Since that is the law, it would have to be done. However, I would try to convince Egeus to change his mind, so I could potentially change the ruling.

  12. M215 Q3

Egeus can be angry for many reasons. He can be angry because Hermia won’t listen to him, and respect him. Also, he may be angry because it is embarrassing to have a daughter who won’t follow what he says. The status of women affected their life, because they didn’t get to choose who they marry. The father/daughter relationship might be different today, because the father might not choose who the daughter marries. Also, he might respect what she has to say, and listen to what she says.

    Q1
If I had this magic flower I would have to fix recistness. I would make it where everybody treats everyone equal. This would make society so much easier and there would be less controvoursey if someone dies of another race from someone of a differient race. Thius would overall make society better and more peaceful.

  14. M203: There were several ways this could’ve been settled other than Oberon manipulating Titania.
    1. They could’ve shared the changeling. (Titania has him these days, Oberon has him these days. )
    2. They could take care of the changeling together.
    3. The changeling wasn’t Oberon’s in the first place! The changeling was given to Titania by one of her followers who died in childbirth. Titania felt it was her responsibility to take care of him. Oberon should’ve respected that the changeling was hers, and maybe she would’ve let him taken care of him sometimes!

If I could correct problems I have a few things I would correct. One is, that if I did something bad I would change my decision that I made to get in trouble. Also, if I made an error in baseball I would change that. And finally, I would correct the sinking of the titanic.

Breaking the law isn't generally a good idea, mostly because if you get caught you would obviously be fined a or sent to jail. It’s only fine to break the law if your allowed to, or told to be police. You could also break the law if you were being chased by a T-Rex or anything of the sort. You could hijack a car or something to get away. You could also dress as a police man and commandeer people’s fridges. But that’s generally not a good idea. Hermia and Lysander are somewhat justified, because it isn't really fair to be forced to marry someone you don’t like, but it also breaking the law, and I would assume they would get in very serious trouble if they got caught. If I was a judge I probably wouldn't convict them, since now it isn't even a crime, and if it was it probably wouldn't be very serious. If I was a judge in Athenian times I would convict them since back then it would be a much more serious crime.

  17. M207 Question 2
Although laws are made to protect the public, I feel that at some points they're meant to be broken. If someone is in a life or death situation, they must do something to protect themselves which may involve breaking a law. Another thing to keep in mind is in some countries where freedom of speech isn't allowed, it may be necessary to stand up for something that you feel is wrong. However, I don't feel like situations like this should happen everyday because it may turn into problems very quickly; and laws should NEVER be broken for someone's own selfish reasons.

Lysander and Hermia disobey Athenian law by running away to get married. Is it ever okay to break the law? Is so, under what circumstances? Were Lysander and Hermia justified in their actions? If you were a judge, would you convict them? Why or why not? It never ok to break the law. I think Lysander and Hermia should justified their actions by going to jail. If I was a judge I would convict them by putting them to jail. I would do that because they both broke the law.

  19. M204 Question 5

I think the perfect relationship is a place in between calm and extreme. If your partner is the exact opposite of you, you may not like everything about them, and it could drive you crazy. For example, I am a clean person, and I would hate to live with someone whose house is a garbage dump. Relationships shouldn’t be too similar either, because you will end up being bored with each other. I have heard that it is better to find someone with a better personality than you so they can help you right your wrongs. Opposites can also learn to like things the others like.
However, it is also good to like some of the same things. A happy, average relationship will probably last the longest, not too crazy, but not too calm either.

  20. M221I think that they could’ve worked things out. I think that they could talk it out. Or they could share possession like 1 week Oberon has it then another 1 Titania has it for one week. Or they could try to work it out to share possession. Also he wouldn’t have to put her in the embarrassing moment.

  21. M205 Q: 1

If I had a magic flower that could change anything in the world I would change three things. First, I would remove all the hate that everyone has for Obama by removing Obama from office along Machelle, no one likes her anyway so why would it make a difference, and put Hillary Clinton in Obama's place. Second, I would remove global warming because that's what everyone says when they say they want to remove something from this world, they also say that they want to remove world hunger, but that's too cliche. My last thing I would fix is homelessness because they look so innocent, but some homeless people just use their money for beer and other things. Those are some things that I would remove if I had a Magical flower like puck.
